Two Old Bags started as a partnership of two women, Ann Swanson and Katie Nagorney, who designed and wrote patterns for hand knitters. Their goal was to write patterns that the knitter could understand and perhaps during the knitting process learn something new. Each pattern is written with the advanced beginner in mind and includes complete instructions from start to finish. Many patterns include technical diagrams and graphs when appropriate.  Ann Swanson passed away in 2009. The Two Old Bags pattern line was sold to Barb Cattani and distributed through Up North Fiber Art Supply. Katie continues to occasionally design new patterns, teach at her local yarn shop, and knit for her own pleasure when not tending to grandchildren and other things "old bags" want to do. She provides advice and insight for the future of Two Old Bags patterns.

Warm Hands - Mittens in four sizes (toddler-adult) are included in this pattern. The straight cuff style allows room to decorate and embellish. Diagrams and instructions for embellishing ideas are included in the pattern. These mittens are knit on double-point needles with sport or worsted weight yarn. Yarn and Needles:  Adult and Child sizes use approximately 200 yards of worsted weight wool yarn that will shrink when washed. Knit on size 10US double point needles. Small child and toddler sizes use approximately 175 yards of sport weight wool yarn. Knit on size 7US double point needles

Betty Bag - a mini version, not felted, of the Bucket Bag. The top of the bag is tied like a banana. It can also be fastened with a buckle. Or graft the handle stitches together to make a smooth handle.cYarn: 200 - 250 yards of a ribbon or tape yarn that normally knits to a gauge of 3 - 3.5 stitches/inch  Needles: Use a needle size that is one or two sizes smaller than the size recommended on the yarn ball band. Size: Depends on yarn choice. The bags in the picture range from 7" to 9" wide.

Harriett Handbag - a generously sized hand-held purse that will make a great addition to your felted wool purse collection. The shape is simple and the tabs at the top are closed before felting to securely hold the wooden handle. Yarn: 550 - 660 yards of wool that will shrink when washed. Needles: 24" long size 10.5US circular needle. Size: Approx. 13" wide and 9" tall. The sides are about 5" wide

Charm Work Bag - a really large knit bag (not felted) inspired by vintage "work" bags seen at flea markets. The knitted pattern in worsted weight yarn creates a circle design where embellishments such as buttons, charms, pins, etc could be attached. The pattern includes written and charted instructions, as well as, directions for fabric lining and attaching a purchased handle.  Yarn: 800 yards of worsted weight yarn in any fiber content. Does not need to felt or shrink  Needles: 24" long circular needle in size 7US (or size needed to obtain gauge)  Finished size: Varies with yarn type and gauge. Approximately 22" wide and 17" tall, excluding handle.

Cold Shoulder - a small, but roomy shrug with 3/4 length sleeves. The simple leaf pattern is an easy lace pattern. Perfect over your shoulders in a cool restaurant or even for knitting in bed.  Yarn: 900 yards of fingering weight yarn  Needles: Size 6US, 24" long circular. Size 3US, 16" circular needle for cuffs  Finished size: Depth from neck to waist is 20". Length from cuff to cuff is determined by the knitter.

Clamshell Bag - Get in the 40's mood with this glitzy vintage style bag. Combine worsted weight wool yarn with an eyelash type yarn, felt and Voila! a bag for a night on the town. Easy to knit with minimal shaping.  Yarn: Worsted weight yarn that will felt and a novelty yarn such as eyelash or fun fur. Large bag requires 440 yards of worsted weight wool and 200 yards of novelty yarn. Small bag requires 300 yards of worsted weight yarn and 120 yards of novelty yarn  Needles: 16" long and 24" long circular needles in size 10.5US. Double point needles size 10.5US  Finished measurements: Large bag is 9" wide at top band and 9" tall before handles. Small bag is 7.5" across top band and 9" tall before handles.

Backback/Purse - Uses a worsted weight yarn and circular needle. The ingenious top closure makes for an outstanding finished bag.  Yarn: Worsted weight wool yarn that knits to a gauge of 4.5 sts/in. Solid color purse or backpack uses 675 yards. The 2-color purse or backpack, uses 450 yards for Main Color and 250 yards for Contrast Color. Needles: 24" long circular needle in size needed to obtain gauge of 5.5 sts/inch. This is usually one or two sizes smaller than the needle size recommended on the yarn band.  Double point needles in same size.  Finished measurements: approximately 13.5" wide and 11" tall

Shoulder Sling Bag - knit with a single strap in the back and a round base. To make the bag look more like a backpack, finish with a square base and 2 straps. This bag is knit from the top down with minimal shaping.  Yarn: 660 yards of worsted weight wool yarn.  Needles: 24" long circular needle in size 10.5US. Double point needles in size 10.5US  Finished measurements:  Width varies from 7" to 10". Height is 10" to 13" tall.

Houndstooth Clutch - a knit bag (not felted) using simple stranded knitting techniques. It is knit from the top down using a worsted weight yarn. A graph is included for the stranded knitting along with lining instructions.  Yarn: DK or Light worsted weight wool yarn; 270 yards for main color and 175 yards for contrast color.  Needles: 24" long circular needle one size smaller than the recommended needle size on the yarn label  and 24" long circular needle two sizes smaller than the recommended needle size on the yarn label  Finished measurements: 14" wide and 9" tall
